Cost of Studying in Canada 2027–28: Complete Guide for Indian Students

There is no specific figure which defines study in Canada cost for Indian students 2027, as tuition is vastly different in each university and programme. The two chosen examples in this guide had a total of CAD 40,175.72 and CAD 58,091 as first-year costs (using 202627 verifiable costs and existing immigration needs). These are tuition, the relevant health insurance, the existing IRCC living-funds requirement, study permit and biometrics charges; however, none of these is calculated with things like travel, medical checkups and language tests (and any real living expenses in excess of the minimum immigration requirements).
This guide divides the total amount to study in Canada cost for Indian students 2027, each of which is associated with an official page to compare the tuition fees in Canada among Indian students by degree and to get ready to demonstrate your proof of funding for a Canada student visa.

What are Canada tuition fees for Indian students?
Indian students pay the international rate. The University of Toronto charges it to anyone who is not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, unless the student receives an exemption, per the U of T registrar. The study in Canada cost for Indian students 2027 therefore starts with your exact program.
According to the latest table of international graduate tuition released by Statistics Canada on 16 September 2026, a national weighted average of CAD 24,693 is indicated amongst international graduate students in 2026-27. It is an average of a country and not a programme indicator and hence students should only use it as a guide to budgeting and establish the actual tuition with their selected university.

Will Indian tuition fees in Canada be different in 2027-28 intakes?
On the official pages that we have checked, however, we did not find any complete 2027-28 fee schedules. Two pages do mention Fall 2027:
According to the University of Alberta, both new international course-based graduate students beginning in Fall 2027 and international graduate thesis-based tuition will be raised by 5.5% each. The fact that the university does not offer a single dollar figure on all graduate programmes in this announcement implies that students must look their own way to find out how much their programme will cost before planning the budget.
Ancillary fees vary; CAD 3,865 on the U of T Engineering list for Fall 2027, starting as a new student in the MEng Extended Full-Time Co-op program. This page is silent as to whether this is within the figure of CAD 76,090.39, and you have to enquire with the department.
Until further notice, the verified 2026-27 programme fees can be used as the planning benchmark for the study in Canada cost for Indian students 2027. When an offer and/or a deposit is offered, substitute those amounts with the official 2027-28 university fees.
What are your government fees for a study permit?
The government part of the cost of studying in Canada for Indian students in 2027 is brief:
- Study permit: CAD 150 each.
- Biometrics: CAD 85/per individual or CAD 170 per family. In its operational manual, IRCC employed India as one of the countries with a requirement that its nationals submit biometrics, unless it is an exemption.
- Attestation letter: Applications in a public institution in the Masters category do not require a provincial attestation letter since 1 January 2026, according to an IRCC announcement. The 2026 ministerial instructions expire on 31 December 2026, and the IRCC 2026 planning document continues to show determination of the 2027 cap as one task; thus, visit IRCC again to check on a 2027 intake.
- Quebec: Quebec determines its own financial needs; hence, this guide applies to the rest of Canada.
There are no fees mentioned on the fee list of IRCC in terms of medical exams and language tests; therefore, include them in the budget.
What is the proof of funds for Canada student visa?
IRCC requires you to show funds for tuition, living expenses and travel to and from Canada, without working in Canada. You must show the first year, and explain how you will pay for later years of a longer program.
Examples of evidence are given by IRCC, and you do not have to give them all:
- Evidence of tuition and housing in the first year, which will be paid, and documents of living costs and travel.
- Proof of a student or education loan from a bank, or of a scholarship.
- Past 6 months' bank statements with evidence of the origin of the money.
- A guaranteed investment certificate (GIC) of a Canadian financial institution.
- A letter from the sponsor containing the supporting documents of the sponsor

How much does it cost students to live in Canada?
IRCC's living amount is a minimum to show, not a budget. Real living expenses in Canada for students can move the study in Canada cost for Indian students 2027 more than that minimum does, depending on your city and housing. CMHC's 2025 Rental Market Report gives average rents for purpose-built apartments, and it says new tenants paid higher rents than sitting tenants.

These are rents for the entire two-bedroom unit, not the rent paid by one student. A student's actual housing cost depends on the property, location and whether the accommodation is shared.
In Toronto and Vancouver, one whole two-bedroom unit costs more per year than the IRCC living amount of CAD 23,448, so your share depends on how many people split the rent.
Health insurance is separate. Ontario universities in UHIP charge CAD 948 for 2026-27, per U of T OISE, and the University of Manitoba charges CAD 440 for the fall term plus CAD 880 for winter. Other universities differ.

Can you work to reduce the cost, and what comes after a master's?
Eligible students can work up to 24 hours a week off campus, and IRCC says working more violates your study permit, per its off-campus work page. During scheduled breaks you may work unlimited hours, per the IRCC help centre. Wages do not count towards your proof of funds for Canada student visa, because IRCC asks you to show funds without working in Canada.
How can you lower your funding gap?
U of T Engineering says MASc students receive at least CAD 20,000 a year for two years after tuition and fees, and lists this for MASc and PhD students, not MEng students. Provincial student aid on the same page is limited to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, so it does not apply to Indian applicants.
IRCC accepts proof of a scholarship or a bank education loan. Our education loan service is a Gateway EduConnect commercial service, not a government body, and it can help you plan a loan.

The Manitoba example is CAD 17,915.28 lower, mostly because tuition differs by CAD 19,087.28 (33,460 minus 14,372.72).
Calculations: 33,460 + 948 + 23,448 + 150 + 85 = 58,091. And 14,372.72 + 800 + 1,320 + 23,448 + 150 + 85 = 40,175.72. At INR 1 = CAD 0.01476 (Bank of Canada, 28 September 2026), 58,091 ÷ 0.01476 = INR 39,35,705, and 40,175.72 ÷ 0.01476 = INR 27,21,932.
Both totals are floors, not the full study in Canada cost for Indian students 2027. Both leave out incidental fees, travel, medical exam, language test and rent above the minimum. The Manitoba page also lists general student fees, such as CAD 132.86 for technology service each fall or winter term.

Mistakes to avoid
- Showing only tuition, or only the living amount, as proof of funds for Canada student visa.
- Planning for tuition alone and ignoring living expenses in Canada for students, such as rent.
- Using the old living amount of CAD 22,895 after 1 September 2026.
- Assuming a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is the only acceptable way to prove funds. IRCC lists several types of financial evidence, so use the documentation that applies to your situation.
- Submitting financial evidence without checking the current IRCC and visa-office instructions for your application.
- Assuming the 2026 attestation letter rule applies to a 2027 application without checking.
