Introduction: Free IELTS Practice Test
A guide outlining the practice resources of the Indian students who are going to take IELTS Academic or General Training.
One of the ways to do this is to take a Free IELTS practice test to get acquainted with the exam format, test on real-world conditions and to realise what skills you can work on till the test day. The first and most safe place to begin is not some randomly constructed list of questions in the internet, but that which has been published either by IELTS or its authorized distributors.
Indian students looking to study in other countries can take advantage of this guide by compiling 15 official IELTS preparation materials in IELTS.org, the British Council and IDP. These consist of Listening and Reading answer keys, examiner comments, writing model responses, Speaking practice questions and computer-test familiarisation tools.
When to Practise IELTS Academic or General Training?
The initial step involves selecting practice material that is related to the test you really require.
According to IELTS, both Listening and Speaking are equal with Academic and General Training, whereas Reading and Writing are dissimilar. IELTS Academic is also focused on academic study and therefore is the appropriate to most students seeking university admissions.

Where Should You Start?
1. IELTS.org Official Sample Questions
IELTS.org should be one of your first stops because the material comes directly from IELTS.
The Academic section provides Listening, Reading and Writing sample tasks. Listening materials include recordings, transcripts and answer keys. Academic Reading covers question types such as multiple choice, True/False/Not Given, matching, completion tasks and short-answer questions.
The site also provides a computer practice experience so that you can preview the appearance of Listening, Reading and Writing on the screen prior to the test. IELTS indicates that in all functions such an environment of practice is not identical to the live system hence may not be a precise simulation but familiarisation.
2. British Council Free Mock Tests
The British Council provides separate practice areas for Academic and General Training candidates.
Academic students can practise Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. General Training candidates can access appropriate Reading and Writing exercises while using the same Listening and Speaking practice format.
The British Council also offers a computer familiarisation test, which is particularly useful if you have prepared mainly from printed material but expect to sit a computer-delivered test.
3. IELTS Ready Free
IELTS Ready is useful when you want something closer to a complete preparation platform rather than isolated sample questions.
The free version currently includes two full mock tests, with Reading and Listening scores and model answers.
Use full mocks after you have already practised individual skills. Taking complete tests repeatedly without analysing your mistakes is usually less useful than identifying why you lost marks and correcting the underlying problem.

4. IDP IELTS Practice Resources
IDP's preparation hub includes familiarisation exercises for Reading, Listening and Writing, along with Speaking Parts 1, 2 and 3. Several resources provide a View answers option.
IDP also provides dedicated practice sets for specific question types and downloadable answer material for Reading and Listening exercises.
This makes it useful when your problem is specific. For example, if matching headings is consistently reducing your Reading score, you can practise that question type rather than completing another entire paper.
The use of a Free IELTS Practice Test: How It Works.
A downloading of questions is not a preparation itself. It is what you do before, during and after the test that counts.
Step 1: Have a testing test.
Start with either a single practice trial or a lengthy batch of questions with no reference to the answers.
The point here is to see where you start not to show that you are already prepared.
Step 2: Recreate realistic timing
The official IELTS materials suggest that they should be practised in timed conditions.
Do not stop because of a challenging question. Exam preparation entails learning how to make the best use of limited time.
Step 3: Distinct knowledge issues and timing issues.
A mislead answer does not necessarily imply the like.
Ask him, why you lost the mark:
- Did you misunderstand the passage?
- Did you miss a keyword while listening?
- Did you run out of time?
- Did you ignore the question instruction?
- Have you committed a spelling or grammercial mistake??
- Did your Writing response fail to address the task?
That diagnosis determines what you should practise next.

Step 4: Review answers properly
In case of Listening and Reading you should compare your answers with some official answers keys.
To write, practice model answers and examiner feedback instead of attempting to memorise an essay.
Practice fluency, Regarding Speaking, relevancy, grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary rather than finding one correct answer.
Step 5: Practise weak question types separately
Do not keep completing full tests if the same error keeps appearing.
If True/False/Not Given questions are your main Reading weakness, practise those specifically. If Task 2 structure is the problem in Writing, work on planning and paragraph development.
Step 6: Return to a full mock
After targeted practice, complete another full mock under realistic conditions and compare your performance.
Another caution given by IDP is that you do not automatically enhance your English in case of sample-test practice. Although, candidates still require routine exposure to the English language by reading, listening, speaking and writing in a real-life situation.

What Does With Answers Mean?
A weakness with most IELTS resource list matrices is that they do not consider each skill as a simple answer sheet.
It does not.
|
IELTS skill |
What official practice usually provides |
|
Listening |
Correct-answer keys and often transcripts |
|
Reading |
Correct-answer keys |
|
Writing |
Sample/model responses, band-scored scripts or examiner comments |
|
Speaking |
Sample questions and assessment guidance, not one fixed answer |
Listening and Reading tasks have keys to their answers on IELTS.org, and its Academic writing has sample Task 2 responses, with the band scores and the commentaries of the examiner.
Thus, just searching an IELTS practice test PDF that has a final answer sheet is insufficient when it comes to preparing Writing or Speaking.
What Changed in IELTS Test Delivery in 2026?
This is the most important update to add to the old May 2026 article.
On 5 March 2026, IELTS announced that fully paper-based IELTS would be phased out from mid-2026 and that IELTS testing would move to computer delivery. IELTS also stated explicitly that exact implementation timelines would vary by market.
The assessed skills, underlying test construct and interpretation of scores were not changed by this delivery update.
Writing on Paper in India
For candidates who prefer handwriting, IELTS introduced a hybrid Writing on Paper option.
IDP India states that this option became available in India from 1 September 2026. Listening and Reading are completed on computer, Writing is handwritten, and Speaking remains with an examiner.
Because IELTS itself says market implementation varies, candidates should check the live Indian booking portal rather than assuming that every location offers identical formats on every date.

Online IELTS Practice vs PDF Practice
|
Format |
Best for |
Limitation |
|
Computer practice |
Becoming comfortable with screen-based testing and navigation |
Requires a device and suitable internet access |
|
Downloadable/PDF material |
Detailed review, annotation and offline practice |
Does not fully reproduce a computer-test interface |
|
Full mock test |
Timing, stamina and overall readiness |
Less useful if mistakes are not reviewed |
|
Skill-specific questions |
Fixing individual weaknesses |
Does not test full-exam endurance |
Given the 2026 move towards computer delivery, Indian candidates should include some screen-based practice even if they also prefer printed worksheets.
Common IELTS Practice Mistakes to Avoid
- Only informal questions: Unprofessionally prepared practice material might not indicate the type of tasks in IELTS correctly.
- Memorising Writing answers: A model response should teach you structure and reasoning, not provide a script to reproduce.
- Ignoring mistakes after a mock: A score without error analysis tells you very little about what to improve.
- Practising only your strongest section: Improving Listening further will not solve weak Writing performance.
- Using the wrong test type: Academic and General Training Reading and Writing are different. Make sure your preparation matches your required test.

FAQs
Where can I get official free IELTS mock exams?
Official preparation material is available at the IELTS.org, the British Council and the IDP IELTS. They include sample questions, examples of what a test taker ought to expect on a question, answer keys, and model answers and familiarisation exercises.
Do free IELTS tests work?
The safest and most reliable is official materials since it is published by IELTS or its official partners and developed based on the actual test format and types of tasks.
Perhaps third party material can be helpful, but this should not substitute official preparation material.
What number of IELTS mock tests do I need to complete?
No official regulation exists that all the candidates should have done a certain number of 10 or 15.
A better course of action is to take on a diagnostic test, examine your areas of weaknesses, and then train those areas after which another mock is used to determine improvement then.
Do I take IELTS using a computer?
Screen-based familiarisation is becoming more and more significant, yes, as due to the recent announcement of IELTS to shift to not be based exclusively with paper-based testing as of mid-2026, the process of its implementation will differ depending on the market.
Are IELTS Writing answers available?
There is no single and objectively right answer to writing as a question is the case with the many Reading or Listening questions. There is instead the availability of model responses to demonstrate how the answers are scored by showing official resources example responses and band-scored scripts and comments provided by examiners.
Conclusion
Hoarding as many mock papers possible is not the ideal way of preparing in IELTS. Just begin with credible material, are there weak points, work on them controlled and consciously and again at full tests to gauge improvement.
The right free IELTS practice test is designed to assist you in mastering the types of questions contained by IELTS, realistic timing practising and learning through errors. There are quite a number of official materials regarding Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, already provided by IELTS.org, the British Council and IDP, so try to use them as the core of your preparation.
