Introduction
For 15 years, I have worked with thousands of families in India, all dedicated to one goal - to provide their children with an education that is of high quality, accessible, and acceptable to the international community. For the last several years, the country that has been consistently chosen is the Netherlands.
I can personally vouch for those who have made their way through the student visa process for the Netherlands since the inception of Gateway Educonnect and have witnessed their journey from the initial stages of preparing their initial set of documents, to the celebratory stages of arriving in the city they chose to study in. I have witnessed my students make it from Amsterdam to Utrecht to Eindhoven and so on and so forth! I've come to understand that the well-organized applications get processed quickly and missed applications or rushed applications create unnecessary delays and stress.
It's a comprehensive guide that was build after years of experience and is based on hundreds of successful visa applications, including all you need to know about the Netherlands student visa in 2026: all requirements, documents, visa fee, visa processing time and much more to help you prepare your visa application with confidence.
What are the Reasons behind Indian Students Studying in the Netherlands?
At Gateway Educonnect, we have observed a definite change over the past 2 intake cycles. Formerly, students who were merely interested in UK, US, or Canadian universities were actively seeking information on Dutch universities.
This trend is not only for the reasons suggested, but also because of the following practical considerations:
- There is not much language barrier for Indian applicants because there are 2100+ English taught programmes offered by Dutch universities.
- The tuition fees in this school are significantly more affordable than in the US or UK, with comparable quality of education and research exposure.
- With quality documentation and provided all requirements are fulfilled, the Netherlands student visa success rate for genuine applicants is excellent.
- Graduates benefit from being able to access an Orientation Year, where they will have up to 12 months to find employment after graduating.
Priya, one of our students who went to a Data Science programme in Utrecht last year, said to our team, "I picked the Netherlands because the course structure didn't just seem theoretical but more practical, and Gateway Educonnect made getting a visa feel more manageable than it felt like it did before I started my programme, which was tricky!

What is Netherlands Student Visa and Who is Eligible for it?
In general, for students studying in the Netherlands for more than 90 days there are two documents that have to be acquired:
- MVV (Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf), is a provisional entry visa sticker which enables the travel to the Netherlands.
- VVR (Residence Permit): Card handed out on arrival - will last for the duration of study.
One of the misconceptions is that students apply for the visa for themselves. As soon as you have submitted the necessary documents your Dutch university (if it is recognized by the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) will apply for your MVV and residence permit for you.

Netherlands Student Visa Requirements 2026
These are the basic requirements for Netherlands student visa applications that our team has encountered this year with Indian students:
- Dutch institution with an unconditional offer of admission which is recognised as a sponsor by the IND.
- Approval that the programme is full-time (part-time does not qualify for a student visa);
- Financial capability to pay for one year of tuition and living expenses (see below).
- Health insurance which is valid in the Netherlands for international students.
- Passport with a validity of 6 months or more than 6 months after your visit.
- English or Dutch - evidence of proficiency in the language of the programme (as specified).
- A confirmed address in the Netherlands: university, private rental agreement, etc.
The Dutch student visa requirements are always only half the battle for our students, so we are always telling them. The paperwork also has to be consistent; for example, if there is a discrepancy between your bank statement dates and the dates on your admission letter, this is one of the most common grounds for clarification by IND.

Netherlands Student Visa Financial Requirement
This is the area where families ask us the most questions — and for good reason: it's constantly evolving.
In addition to your tuition fees, for the 2026 intake, IND will require a monthly financial requirement of EUR 1,090 – EUR 1,225 (which equals EUR 13,000 – EUR 15,000 per academic year). This is the criterion that is used to evaluate proof of funds for student visa applications to the Netherlands.
Accepted ways to show proof of funds that Netherlands student visa officers will recognise include:
- A bank statement from the accountant that displays the necessary balance in a personal or joint account for the previous few months.
- If you are being funded by a parent/guardian, then their income and asset documents will be provided.
- An education loan sanction letter from a recognised bank or NBFC; many universities accept it as well.
- A scholarship confirmation letter, if you receive a full or partial scholarship for living expenses.
Our experience has shown us that students who plan to take an education loan instead of taking out a private loan at the last minute will complete the proof-of-funds Netherlands student visa process much more smoothly. This is why one of the services Gateway Educonnect provides is dedicated loan assistance. We have seen so many presentations of good applications delayed due to the time lag in the financial paperwork.

Netherlands Student Visa Processing Time
The Netherlands student visa processing time is one of the most frequently asked questions we get asked by students. This is especially the case when students apply right before the visa deadlines.
- Standard IND decision time is 60 days from the day that your university submits a full application.
- The Netherlands student visa processing time can be as long as 90 days during peak season (May – August).
- Once approved by MVV, allow 1–2 weeks to pick up the sticker at the VFS centre in India/Dutch Embassy.
- Once you've arrived, your VVR residence card is normally available within 2 weeks of your biometrics appointment.
Based on years of observing these timelines, we highly recommend sending all documents to your university at least 4 months before your departure. Late applications submitted during the cycle are most likely to be delayed, as this is usually when the IND offices are busiest.

The Step-by-Step Netherlands Student Visa Application Process
These are the exact steps we take with every Gateway Educonnect student, neatly packaged.

Step 2: Get Your Visa Papers
- Gather your passport, academic records and diplomas in the appropriate format.
- Organise financial evidence for the proof of funds for the Netherlands student visa requirement.
- Make sure your course is full-time, part-time courses are not eligible for a visa.
Step 3: Pick up Your Visa Papers
- Fill out papers and turn them in to your university's international admissions office.
- Follow up promptly on requests—most often, the reason for delays is because the files are not completed.
- Verify your Netherlands address for University housing, renting a house or a homestay booking.
Step 4: University Files Your IND Application
- The combined MVV and VVR application is submitted to your University, which is a recognised sponsor by the IND.
- You will pay the Netherlands student visa fees (or your tuition fees will include the amount of these fees).
- IND reviews begin in the usual timeframe as described above.
Step 5: Get Approval and collect MVV
- Once IND accepts your file, you will be contacted through your International Office at your University.
- The validity period of the MVV sticker is for 90 days and please check the validity and dates on your passport.
- Appointments can be made and an MVV sticker obtained from the Dutch embassy/ VFS Global centre in India.
Step 6: Travel, register, and then collect your VVR.
- Travel to the Netherlands and check in to your confirmed accommodation by or on the date of your intake.
- Make sure you register with your local municipality (gemeente) within 5 days of your arrival; otherwise, there may be problems with fulfilling the requirements.
- Please go to the IND desk and pick up your VVR residence card in about 2 weeks.

Making Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them!
In more than 23,000 students guided in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and Dubai over the past 15+ years, there are some consistent trends. The following are the most common visa application errors for the Netherlands visa:
- Failing to submit bank statements for the complete 12-month period (IND queries will be issued).
- Applying to any programme or institution that is not recognised by IND, which is impossible irrespective of any documents.
- Waiting till after an offer of admission to arrange insurance and accommodation wastes time.
- Not taking the address into account before the last minute, particularly in busy cities such as Amsterdam and Utrecht.
Arjun was one of the boys we helped last year, and his income proof for his sponsor was returned because the format was slightly different from what IND wants. Within a week, we corrected it via our Home Counselling service, and his Netherlands student visa was granted without any further delay on the second attempt. That's why guided support is important — it could cost a real amount of time if it's a minor formatting issue.
